Barry John was first
selected for the British & Irish
Lions tour to South Africa in 1968.
Unfortunately just 15 minutes into
the first Test his shoulder was
badly dislocated and he played no
further part in the series. He was
selected once again in 1971 and his
performance at outside half to
fellow Welsh hero
Gareth Edwards at number 9 saw him
awarded the nickname of ‘King’. He
scored a record breaking 188 points
on the tour, 30 of which came in
test matches.
For Wales, Barry John
was idolised for his mercurial
talent, helping them to be pretty
much invincible in his era. A
distinguished graduate of the Welsh
half-back factory.
