Without doubt one of the top lock
forwards of his generation, Martin
Johnson has skippered his Leicester
Tigers, England and the Lions to
remarkable success. "Johnno" was the first
player ever to captain two British &
Irish Lions tours when he was
appointed captain for the 2001 tour
to Australia. In 1993 he toured New
Zealand with the Lions as a call-up
in place of Dooley and, in the
November, he made his second
appearance in an England jersey,
helping England to a 15-9 win over
the All Blacks. In 1997, just weeks
after taking on the Leicester Tigers
captaincy, he was entrusted with
leading the Lions to South Africa to
face the Springboks. His quiet,
hardened professional approach and
natural leadership were key to the
historic series win.
Six Nations Grand
Slam and Rugby World Cup winning
captain puts Martin Johnson squarely
in the pantheon of rugby union.
