The powerful Welsh centre's unique
brand of crash-ball running has seen
him past the 50-cap mark for his
country, and the three-time British
& Irish Lions tourist has never been
one to shy away from a tackle, or
making the hard yards in the backs.
He was first selected to tour with
the Lions to New Zealand in 1993 at
the age of just 22, and was chosen
ahead of England's Will Carling for
both the second and third Tests,
partnering Jeremy Guscott. His
unparalleled performances and
determination in 1997’s tour to
South Africa saw him awarded the
title of ‘Man of the Series’. His
non-selection for the 2001 Lions
squad for Australia was a
controversial one, but an injury to
England's Mike Catt saw Gibbs flown
out to join the tour party four
games into the trip.
